St. Edmund finished the 2013 non-district schedule with a  3-2 record, including thrilling wins over former district rivals Opelousas Catholic and Westminster Christian Academy.

Tonight, the Blue Jays begin their trek to the goal of a District 5-1A title against Catholic High of Pointe Coupee.

“We feel good about ourselves but we still have some issues to clean up,” David said. “We need to stop the turnovers and penalties.”

CHPC (3-2) opened the season with a 40-7 loss to Ascension Catholic before rolling up wins over Hanson (33-14), East Iberville (41-8) and Delcambre (21-0). Last week, the Hornets suffered a 45-14 loss to Opelousas Catholic.

CHPC is led by quarterback Jonas Guichet (61-108-5, 5 TDs for 871 yards).

The Blue Jays are moving the ball with a balanced offensive attack with 944 yards on the ground and another 891 passing.

So far this season, quarterback Drew Brown has rushed for 491 yards and six touchdowns, while completing 68-of-126 passes for 881 yards with 14 touchdowns and 10 interceptions.

Stone LeJeune has 22 receptions for 279 yards and six touchdowns as Brown’s main target, while Chase Dupre is close behind with 19 catches for 249 yards and four touchdowns.

“The defenses have tried to stop Stone which opens up the other side of the field,” David said. “It was also good to see Cullen Brown make some crucial catches last week.

“He caught a deep ball for a touchdown in the third quarter to give us the lead and then in the fourth quarter he caught a  third-down conversion to help us run the clock out.”

So far this season, the Blue Jays have allowed 866 yards rushing and 577 through the air.

Last season, the Blue Jays finished 4-3 in district with losses to Catholic of Pointe Coupee (28-21), Pointe Coupee Central (40-34) and WCA (47-21).

With wins over OC and the Crusaders this year, David is hopeful that helps build momentum heading into district competition.

“The first win in district is big,” David said. “It gives you a head start over the other teams.

“The battle will be a lot like last year,” the coach said as the district battles begin. “It is anybody’s to win.”

Pointe Coupee Central won the district last season, while WCA finished second. The Blue Jays and Catholic of Pointe Coupee finished tied for third place.
