New PTA and officers at Highland Elementary

After several inquiries by a group of Highland parents wanting to start a Parent Teacher Association, acting principal, Chastity Wilson’s response was, “Let’s do it.”
Parent Involvement Facilitator at Highland, Cindy Burge, met with Wilson and Danielle Johnson, concerned parent, to plan an agenda to present to Highland’s parents and teachers.
On Sept. 17 the first official Highland PTA meeting was held in the school’s cafeteria.  The meeting was attended by a large number of concerned parents and teachers.
Wilson expressed thanks to all who were in attendance at the meeting and welcomed all to Highland and voiced her goals and concerns for the children at Highland.  At the top of her list is installing security cameras throughout the campus, thus assuring a safe environment for students and faculty.  Wilson also spoke about  the lack of playground equipment for the children at Highland Elementary.  She asked for suggestions and support from the group to raise money to purchase these items.
After discussions and suggestions were made, it was clear that parents were onboard with Wilson’s vision for the school.
Officers were nominated and voted upon.  Officers include:  President Danielle Johnson, Vice President Kim Freeman, Secretary Ladonna Guillory, Treasurer Gabrielle Reed, and Parliamentarians Joseph Matte and Brandon Freeman.
Highland’s PTA will meet every third Tuesday of the month and all community members are encouraged to attend.  The next PTA meeting will be on October 15, at 5:45 p.m. in the school’s cafeteria.
If any business or organization would like to make any donations, monetary and/or equipment, contact Principal Wilson or Ms. Burge at the school, 457-5161.
