Veterans honored at Highland Elementary

Several veterans were recognized and honored at Highland Elementary Thursday during a brief program.
Among those honored, a U.S. Army veteran himself, was St. Landry Parish Superintendent Patrick Jenkins.
Students were entertained with the Eunice High School Band as members played “The Star Spangled Banner. “
Highland students Tyja Cooper and Faja Guillory read a poem, “What Is A Veteran,” and students sang a patriotic song together, “This Land Is Your Land.” Students and veterans paid tribute to the American Flag by reciting the Pledge of Allegiance.
Special guest veterans were introduced to students and faculty. They all received certificates of appreciation for their service. They included: Eugene Thibodeaux, U.S Army; Leelen Lavergne, U.S. Army; Rosalee Williams, U.S. Navy; Clifton Lemelle, U.S. Army; Alvin Wilson, U.S.Army; Terry Matte, U.S. Army; Donald Estillette, U.S. Army; Jasper Manuel, U.S. Navy; Bernell Smith, U.S. AirForce; Jim David, U.S. Army; Larry LeJeune, U.S. Navy; Robert Latiolais, U.S. Navy; and Betty David, Peace Corps.
Mistress of ceremonies Shelsy Williams, reminded students, “We honor veterans, and I encourage you to thank a veteran for serving our country.”
Lorie LeDoux, principal, extended a thank you to each veteran, their service and sacrifice, and welcomed them back to campus.
