Aldermen OK gas rate hike; Wal-Mart resolution

A $3 increase in the basic natural gas rate charge was approved by Eunice aldermen Tuesday night without any public comment.
The increase is on the first 1,000 cubic feet of gas.
The increase is expected to raise revenues from $500,000 to $600,000 a year and help pay for improvements to the city’s natural gas system.
“It cost about $100,000 to do a block,” Moody said in a previous meeting. “It is very expensive.”
Moody was not at Tuesday’s meeting.
The increase raises the basic rate from $7.20 to $10.20 per 1,000 cubic feet per month.
City officials have said the rate increase is needed to update an aging system that may eventually pose hazards.
Aldermen also approved a resolution allowing a city agreement with Wal-Mart for a Neighborhood Market Store at St. Mary and U.S. 190 expected to employ about 55 people.
