Canoe flips, man drowns while frogging

Staff Report

A St. Landry man is dead after his canoe capsized on a frogging trip on Bayou Marron between Mamou and Chataignier in Evangeline Parish.
According to a news release from the Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries, 58-year-old Lawrence Fontenot and his brother-in-law were frogging early Monday morning near where La. 95 crosses the bayou when the boat flipped.
The brother was not identified.
Neither were wearing a personal flotation device when they entered the water, investigators said. Fontenot’s brother-in-law was able to make it to shore and call for help.
Authorities were notified of a missing boater at 3 p.m. Monday, and search and rescue crews from the Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries Enforcement Division and the Evangeline Parish Sheriff’s Office recovered Fontenot’s body shortly before 6 p.m.
Wildlife and Fisheries is the lead investigative agency for the incident, and it is still under investigation.
