Chawana Fontenot to run for council at-large seat

Former City Council member Chawana Fontenot confirms she plans to run for the at-large seat in the Nov. 4 primary.
Fontenot, 12 years a council member from Ward 3, ran third in the mayoral contest in 2010.
“I will be a candidate for the at-large seat unless something unexpected and extraordinary occurs between now and then,” Fontenot said.
She said she had told at-large councilman Jack Burson her intentions.
Burson confirmed at Tuesday night’s regular council meeting that he will seek re-election.
Burson is completing his fifth four-year term.
Fontenot said she decided to re-enter public life because she “truly enjoys serving people.”
Since being out of office, she feels she has gained a new perspective on the city’s needs.
Her decision to run is the only council seat contest to this point.
Ward 1 member Roland Miller says he’s not seeking another term.
No one has announced intentions to seek that vacant seat and Miller remains non-committal when asked if he will run for some other post.
Ward 2’s Germaine Simpson, Ward 3’s Junior Bergeron and Ward 4’s Scott Fontenot say they will seek new terms. No potential candidates have announced intentions to run against them.
Mayor Rusty Moody has previously said he will seek a second term, and reiterated that this week.
