The Eunice Rotary Club was preparing for a 75th anniversary of the club. The charter club members were named in a front page article. Charter members were Didier Ardoin, Abraham Boudreaux, J.W. Berwick, J.J. Fruge, V.M. Fontenot, Dr. G.P. Garland, J.E. Gomer, George T. Guillet, C. J. Hebert, J. Arthur Harris, Dr. Harry Jenkins, Guy H. Jones, J.C. Keller, Dr. Charles W. Lewis, M.M. Milburn, Emile Miller, M.M. Manning, C. A. Morghinveg, A. J. McGee, R.K. Norris, Melvin P. Strother, A. R. Picou, Dr. E. Viator, L.O. Wade and Louis Wright.
Mark Manuel, administrator, was on hand to accept the Friend of the Chamber award on behalf of the Eunice Community Medical Center at the annual chamber banquet. Randall Vige was recognized as Board Member of the Year. Lynn LeJeune was chamber executive director.
Eunice native Carlton Loewer pitched his first shutout in his second year with the Phillies.
Shella Fruge, wife of Rep. Greg Fruge, was elected historian of the Louisiana Legislative Spouse’s Auxiliary.
Acadia Parish voters rejected the creation of a landfill commission and the acceptance of out-of-parish waste at the parish landfill. The vote as 94.5 percent against the proposal.
Peggy Fontenot was chosen as Volunteer of the Month for April and Suzanne Soileau as Volunteer of the Month for March of the Nursing Home of Eunice of Eunice Volunteer Auxiliary.
Kelly E. Vasseur, a pre-medicine major at LSUE, received the award for outstanding student beyond the sophomore year during the LSUE Honors Convocation on May 4.
