Halloween: On Thursday in Eunice, rain or shine

Eunice is sticking to its pumpkin guns. The city’s official Halloween observance times are previously declared for Thursday, Oct. 31. Some area municipalities are changing their trick-or-treat time to Wednesday evening due to the forecast of stormy weather on goblin night.  And the official observance in rural St. Landry Parish has been changed to Wednesday from 5:30 p.m. - 7:3m p.m.

According to Eunice city officials, Basile and Church Point, Krotz Springs and Arnaudville have also rescheduled to Wednesday. Eunice officials said that after Church Point announced its schedule change on Monday, a handful of calls were received to Eunice city hall. The Eunice weather forecast is for a 54 percent chance of thunderstorms during the day with a 60 percent chance of thunderstorms in the evening, according to accuweather.com Sabrina Gautreaux, of Extreme Fun Night at the Northwest Community Center, said that indoor opportunities for trick-or-treaters are available at the center. “We have 5,000 postcards that went out saying that it would be on Thursday,”said Gautreaux. “I got a phone call from the mayor’s office this morning, talking to me about whether or not we were going to go on Thursday. I didn’t have a clue that any of the other cities were changing their dates.” Gautreaux said that the Freedom Church of Eunice has more than 20,000 pieces of candy to give away on Thursday at the Northwest Community Center. “We’re going to have 11 to 12 games for the kids,” she said. “It’s for the children. We’re going to do everything that we can to help with umbrellas and anything else when it comes to the rain. The kids are going to play games and earn as much candy and prizes available. And it’s free to the community.” Gautreaux said that in addition to prizes and candy, souvenir photos of the Halloween-costumed kids are also free to the public. With the festivities scheduled to remain on-going, merchants on 2nd Street in downtown Eunice are set to indulge trick-or-treaters on Thursday, rain or shine starting at 5 p.m. before trick-or-treating officially kicks off in Eunice at 6 p.m. city wide.
