School Board asks public for its opinion on next superintendent

By Harlan Kirgan Editor

The St. Landry Parish School Board placed a survey on its website Tuesday asking the public to pick the top ten desired characteristics of an effective superintendent.
Mary Ellen Donatto, a Eunice School Board member, said, “We saw that there were other districts in other states who allow public input.”
The public’s opinion will come through its elected officials, she said at a committee meeting in August when the survey was first introduced publicly.
“I do think the public should have a voice,” she said.
The survey is available at the School Board’s website www.slp.k12.la.us until Sept. 11.
An announcement of the survey included: “St. Landry Parish School Board is in the beginning stages of selecting a new Superintendent. Board members would appreciate the entire community’s input in this process. An online survey has been designed so that you can inform your particular board representative of the characteristics you feel are important in the next leader of our school system.”
The School Board voted not to renew current Supt. Edward Brown’s contract after Dec. 31.
In an advertisement for the position, the pay range is given as $128,000 to $160,000 depending on experience.
The application deadline was Aug. 22.
