Students to get free meals

St. Landry Parish public school students are to start receiving free meals in November.
Lucretia Chancler, supervisor of child nutrition, announced at a School Board Executive Committee meeting that it is possible for the school district to provide the free meals starting Tuesday.
The committee approved the free meals, but the action must be ratified by the full board at its meeting Thursday.
Chancler said the disaster declaration from the August flooding increased the number of students receiving free lunches by about 2,000, which made it feasible for the district to offer the free meals.
The meals are subsidized by the federal government.
Breakfast prices range from 30 cents to 75 cents, lunch prices are 40 cents to $1.50.
The school district serves 229,321 lunches and 130,044 breakfasts each month, according to statistics distributed to the board by Chancelor at the Oct 24 meeting.
Chancelor said students who owe meal money will be required to pay their debt.
