Unrestrained man killed in 2-vehicle crash

News release

New Iberia, LA- Shortly after 11:00 AM on Friday, January 29, 2016, Troopers from Louisiana State Police Troop I were dispatched to a two vehicle fatal crash on the south service road of US 90 near Curtis Lane in New Iberia. The crash claimed the life of 37 year-old Roland Joseph, of New Iberia.
Crash scene investigators were able to determine that Joseph was driving a 2002 Ford F-150 westbound on the south service road of US 90. For reasons still under investigation, Joseph ran off of the right side of the roadway and overcorrected. Joseph’s vehicle began to rotate counterclockwise, crossed into eastbound lane, and was struck by a 2008 Chevrolet Silverado 2500, operated by 52 year-old Durius Barras, of New Iberia. Joseph was not wearing a seat belt and was partially ejected from the vehicle. Joseph sustained critical injuries and was transported to Iberia General Medical Center where he was later pronounced dead. Barras was wearing a seat belt and sustained severe injuries. Barras was flown to Lafayette General Medical Center by Air-Med.
It is unknown if impairment is a factor in this crash. As part of the on-going crash investigation, blood samples were obtained from both drivers. The samples will be examined by the Louisiana State Police Crime Lab.
While not every crash is survivable, seat belt use remains the most effective way to save lives and reduce injuries in crashes. Please buckle-up every trip every time, never drive impaired, and eliminate distractions.
Troop I has investigated 4 fatal crashes resulting in 4 deaths so far in 2016.
