There are three teams still undefeated in District 5-1A play and St. Edmund leads the trio that also includes Pointe Coupee Central and Sacred Heart of Ville Platte.

The list will shorten this week as the Blue Jays (5-2, 2-0) entertains  tenth-ranked PCC (5-2, 2-0) at 7:30 p.m. Friday for homecoming.

Sacred Heart (4-2, 2-0) still has Catholic High of Pointe Coupee (3-4, 0-2), Pointe Coupee Central and the Blue Jays left on the schedule.

“This is a big game for us this week,” St. Edmund head coach Thomas David said.

“It is going to be a tough task. They are a good bunch, we need to show up and play a good ball game.”

Pointe Coupee Central has grabbed district wins over False River (46-0) and CHPC (56-14) as well as victories over East Iberville (64-0), Baker (49-26) and Tara (56-22).

The Cougars’ only losses came against 3-A Livonia (52-28) and 4-A Ellender (56-50).

PCC quarterback Altonio Johnson has thrown for more than 1,800 yards and  25 touchdowns. He has also ran for 13 touchdowns.

Johnson completed 28-of-35 for 485 yards and four touchdowns in PCC's game against Ellender on Sept. 27, so he is a very serious threat to the Blue Jay defense.

His main receivers are Delfontay Powell 43-711, 10 TDs) and Stephen Guidry (20-654, 8 TDs).

“They are a very talented group who can put up a lot of points,” David said of the Cougars.

They are also playing better on defense than they did last year.

“We need to force some turnovers and limit the big plays as much as we can,” the coach said. “We need to be able to control the ball and score points.”

The Blue Jay offense is led by quarterback Drew Brown who has completed 79-of-144 passes for 1,024 yards with 10 interceptions and 18 touchdowns.

He has also gained 713 yards on 110 carries with nine touchdowns.

His main targets have been  Stone LeJeune (25, 336, 7 TDs) and Chase Dupre (21-283, 5 TDs).

“We are playing one of the best teams on our schedule in a battle for the district championship,” the Blue Jay coach said.

“Hopefully homecoming will also help their focus and not be a distraction.”
