Heading into the fourth week of the football season, the combined record of St. Edmund’s non-district opponents is 10-5 with Northwest, Opelousas Catholic and furture foe Beau Chene still undefefeated at 3-0.
Iota (1-2) won its first game of the season with a 36-27 win over Lake Arthur
This week’s foe – Port Barre – is still searching for its first win of the season after losing to Opelousas Catholic (34-0), Sacred Heart of Ville Platte (20-14) and Beau Chene (33-6).
“They run a lot of formations with a big running back,” the coach said.
“They obviously have more depth than us.”
The Blue Jays (1-2) are coming off a 35-0 loss to OC, but St. Edmund head coach Andy Hargroder said he was proud of the fight his team displayed.
“I challenged the kids at halftime not to quit and play hard the rest of the way,” he said. “I want to fight and never quit.”
The winless Red Devils have struggled on both sides of the ball as Port Barre has been outscored, 87-20.
“We are looking to take advantage of any mistake they make,” he said. “But we don’t need to make mistakes either.
“It is more about us than it is about them,” he said. “We are preparing to do our best – there won’t be any quit in them.”
The Blue Jay defense has held strong against the run so far this season, limiting opponents to 98.3 yards to per game.
But St. Edmund has allowed 170 yards passing per game, including 254 yards for OC.
“They had a good scheme,” the Blue Jay coach said of OC. “There were some mismatches.”
Hargroder said there are postitives his team has made.
“We are getting to executing our offense the way that is should be,” he said. “It is something that is all new and it takes time for offenses to click.”
The Class 3-A Red Devils earned a 39-18 win over the Blue Jays last season at Port Barre.
