Blue Jays soar past Hornets

It was good to get the win and move forward

There was 909 yards of total offense and 97 points scored between the two teams Thursday night as the St. Edmund Blue Jays soared to a 63-34 win over Catholic High of Pointe Coupee.

With the win the Blue Jays improved to 4-2 overall and 1-0 in District 5-1A.

St. Edmund travels to North Central this Friday as district play continues.

The 63 points scored by the Blue Jays breaks the previous 62-6 win over Amy Bradford Ware in 1992.

“It was good to get the win and move forward,” St. Edmund head coach Thomas David said. “We executed well on offense throughout the game.

“On defense we played hard but missed some plays in the third and fourth quarter when we dropped a couple of interceptions and missed tackles that would have ended drives.”

After blocking a Hornet punt in the opening series, the Blue Jays took six plays to go 35 yards for the first of many points.

Zach LaFleur scored on a 7-yard run and Kyle Verdugo’s PAT gave the Jays a 7-0 lead with 9:05 left in the first period.

The defense stood tall again as Stone LeJeune intercepted Hornet quarterback Gabe Vandegrift to give the Jays the ball at midfield.

Another six-play drive was capped off by a 18-yard touchdown run by Gibson LaFleur and Verdugo’s kick pushed St. Edmund ahead 14-0 with 6:19 remaining in the opening period.

Catholic responded as Landon LeMay broke loose through the middle of the Blue Jay defense for a  45-yard yard touchdown run. Vandegrift’s kick closed the gap to 14-7 with 5:06 left.

After the teams exchanged punts, the Blue Jays completed an eight-play, 86 yard drive when Drew Brown connected with Alex Hunt for an 11-yard touchdown. Verdugo’s PAT gave the Jays a 21-7 advantage with 10:37 left before intermission.

After another back-to-back drives resulting in punts, the Blue Jays blocked another punt to set up shop at the CHPC 21.

After a roughing the quarterback penalty moved the ball closer, Brown found Ross LaFleur open for a 10-yard touchdown. Verdugo’s kick pushed the Jays ahead, 28-7 at the 6:05 mark.

The Hornets lost a fumble at the SEH 25 and the Blue Jays moved the ball 75 yards in nine plays as Brown made several key runs in the drive.

The Blue Jay quarterback scored on a 3-yard run and Verdugo’s PAT gave St. Edmund a 35-7 lead with 1:25 left before the break.

The Blue Jays took the second half kickoff at  midfield and quickly added points to the scoreboard when LeJeuene raced 33 yards with Brown’s pass.

Verdugo added the extra point as the Jays forged ahead 41-7 with 10:21 left in the third period.

Catholic then went on a  10-play, 53-yard drive mainly through the air, finished with a 20-yard touchdown from Jonas Guichet to Jacob Juge. Vandegrift’s kick closed the gap to 41-14 with 8:01  remaining.

St. Edmund took five plays to move 70 yards on their next drive, aided by a 40-yard scamper by Brown.

Zach LaFleur scored on the next play from three-yards out and  Verdugo’s PAT gave the Jays a 49-14 lead with 5:50 left in the third frame.

In eight straight passing plays, the Hornets moved 76 yards and scored on a 24-yard pass from Guichet to Vandegrift. The extra point attempt was blocked as the Hornets trailed 49-20 with 3:29 remaining.

Early in the fourth quarter the Blue Jays completed a nine-play, 65 yard drive when Brown ran the final five yards.

Verdugo’s PAT increased SEH’s lead to 56-20 with 10:58 left in the game.

On fourth-and-one at midfield, Catholic quaterback Guichet’s tipped pass was intercepted by Alex Hunt to set up the final Blue Jay touchdown.

The four-play, 60 yard drive was highlighted by Zach LaFleur’s 46-yard scoring run. Verdugo’s PAT with 7:21 left scored the historic 63rd point.

Catholic continued to battle as Guichet connected with Andrew Jarreau for a 40-yard touchdown at the 5:07 mark and Darius Munson picked up a muffed snap and raced 35-yards for the touchdown.

Boyd Smith’s two-point conversion closed the final margin to 63-34 with 4:14 left in the game as the Blue Jays then ran out the clock.

Brown led with 178 yards on 15 carries, while Zach LaFleur had a strong night with 125 yards on 17 carries. Gibson LaFleur added 84 yards on  13 carries as the Blue Jays finished with 430 yards on the ground.

Brown completed 9-of-16 passes for 107 yards, with Hunt (4-34) and LeJeune  (3-57) the top two Blue Jay receivers. The duo also had interceptions on defense in the game.

Guichet completed 29-of-48 passes for 273 yards with Andrew Jarreau (6-60), Jalen Pierrotti (6-32)  and Vandegrift (4-52) his main targets.
