PRAIRIE BASSE – The Eunice High Bobcats recovered from a slow first quarter to take a 27-3 victory over the Beau Chene Gators in 4-4A play here Friday night.

The win improved the overall record of the Bobcats to 6-4, with a district mark of 4-2. The Gators fell to 2-8, 1-5 for the year.

The Cats had a rough start to the contest as a muffed punt at their own 33 gave the Gators field position.

Beau Chene managed to reach the Eunice 8-yard line before settling for a 36-yard field goal by Cole Cormier.

The Cats mounted a drive into Gator territory following the kickoff, but failed on a fourth-and-four at the Gator 45.

The Gators used nine plays to drive as far as the Cats’ 13 before having to settle for another field goal try.

This time Cormier’s 33-yard attempt was blocked, keeping the score at 3-0.

After an incomplete pass at their own 23, Bobcat wingback Chris Johnson turned the left corner on a speed sweep and outran all defenders for a 77-yard touchdown. Wesley Hebert kicked the PAT and Eunice High owned a 7-3 lead with 10:06 left in the first half.

Following an exchange of punts, the Gators found themselves pinned back at their own one-yard line with 5:33 left in the half.

The Gators managed to make a first down, but on a third-and-10, quarterback Andrew Morgan had a pass intercepted by Jake Sonnier who returned it 17 yards to the 3-yard line. On the next play, Darious Richard ran in for the score.

The PAT kick was blocked to keep it a 13-3 game.

With less than 30 seconds left in the half, Eunice’s Andrew Lomas intercepted a Morgan pass.

Bobcat quarterback Alex Richard passed to Jerwaski Thomas for 16 yards and to Sonnier for 27, but the half ended with Sonnier being tackled on the 4-yard line.

The Cats had a chance to add to their lead on their second possession of the third quarter after Alex Richard’s 36-yard run.

But a fumbled snap and a sack ended the threat.

The Gators presented a gift on the ensuing possession when a high snap allowed the Cats to recover the ball at the Gators’ 15.

Three plays later, Sonnier ran for the 8-yard touchdown. Sonnier added the two-point conversion run to put the Cats up 21-13 with 1:35 left in the third quarter.

Twenty-three seconds later, Sonnier intercepted a Morgan pass at the Gators’ 45 and returned it for a touchdown.

The PAT kick failed but the Cats held a 27-3 lead.

The Gators had one last scoring opportunity with 6:52 left in the game when they recovered a Bobcat fumble at the Eunice 39.

But, after a 21-yard run by DeAndrae Bossier, the Cats allowed just two yards on the next four downs to end the threat.

The Cats then ran out the clock.

Leading the attack for the Bobcats was Johnson with six carries for 106 yards and a touchdown.

Darious Richard added 46 yards on 12 attempts, Alex Richard had 27 on seven carries, and Sonnier added 19 on six carries.
