Bobcats face Bears for homecoming

By Tom Dodge

Eunice High is celebrating homecoming this week.
But after the character-theme days and powder-puff football game, the Bobcats will take on Church Point in a key District 5-3A contest.
“Our season is coming down to this game,” Eunice head coach Paul Trosclair said. “This game will have a big impact on where we end up in district and our position in the playoffs.”
After starting 0-5, the Bears are 2-0 in district play with wins over Port Barre (34-6) and Pine Priaire (44-7).
Church Point opened the season with losses to 6-1 Rayne (33-3), 6-1 Iowa (27-12), 7-0 Kaplan (30-13), 7-0 Jennings (27-21) and 3-4 Frankinton (42-27).
“They have gotten better and better,” Trosclair said of the Bears. “They are peaking at the right point of the season.”
Eunice is 3-4 overall and 1-1 in district after a 14-7 loss to Northwest and a forfeit to Opelousas.
“We don’t have many games left,” Trosclair said. “Our number one focus is Church Point because we still have a chance to host a playoff game.
“It basically comes down to this game for both teams,” he said. “We are still in the middle of pack and Church Point wants to win the district championship.”
In two common opponents, the Bobcats also lost to Jennings (40-27) and Rayne (28-27) in non-district play.
In the win over Pine Prairie last week, the Bears rolled up 326 yards on the ground led by running backs Trey Babineaux (112 yards on eight carries and three touchdowns) and Rodney Dupuis (119 yards on seven carries and a score).
“They are a ball control-type offense keep it away from the other team,” Trosclair said. “They do that well.
“We need to play really good defense and make the most of our opportunities on offense.”
Trosclair said it should be an exciting night at Bobcat Field.
“We know there is a lot riding on this game but we traditionally play well at homecoming,” he said.
Last year, Eunice downed Church Point 37-6 en route to the district title.
