Bobcats grab homecoming win

By John Burson

The Eunice High Bobcats scored a touchdown and a two-point conversion with 9:25 left in the fourth quarter to take a 21-14 lead over the Church Point High Bears.
Coach Paul Trosclair’s Bobcats then held off the Bears over the final minutes to claim the victory as they celebrated Homecoming.
Eunice’s Dashawn Vigers put the game away by intercepting a pass with 1:15 left on the clock to secure the win.
The Bobcats evened their overall record to 4-4 and improved their District 5-3A record to 2-1 with the victory.
The loss dropped the Bears to 2-6 overall and to 2-1 in district play.
“We’ve been playing tight games like this since the second game of the season,” said Coach Trosclair following the game.
“But our team never quits. We find a way to get the job done.”
The Bobcats opened the game with a 55-yard scoring drive that took five plays with sophomore Avery Lee scoring on a two-yard run.
Lee had runs of 28 and 12 yards on the drive. The PAT failed, but the Cats led 6-0 with 10:40 left in the first quarter.
The Bobcat defense got the ball right back to its offense as they forced a punt.
A bad snap sailed over the head of punter Austin Manuel, who recovered the ball after a 10-yard loss.
Taking over at the Bears’ 29, the Cats took five plays to score, with Trevin Ceasar doing the honors on a seven-yard run. Austin Phillips kicked the PAT to put the Cats up 13-0.
But the Bears were not ready to surrender. Taking possession at their own 37 on the kickoff, the Bears put together a 63-yard scoring drive in 12 plays, capping the drive on a Breelyn Jones pass to J.C. Arceneaux for a 23-yard touchdown. Manuel kicked the PAT to cut the lead to 13-7.
The Bears got a break on the ensuing kickoff when they recovered a Bobcat fumble at the Eunice 33-yard line.
The Bears wasted no time in taking advantage of the break as they moved 33-yards in nine plays for a touchdown. Freshman running back Rodney Dupuis capped the drive with a five-yard run and Manuel kicked the PAT to put the Bears up 14-13.
With less than seven minutes left in the half, the Bobcats tried to answer, despite starting at their own 9-yard line. Quarterback Jaden Brasseaux converted a first down with a 26-yard pass to Jordan Ledet.
The Cats moved down to the 11-yard line of the Bears before stalling and Phillips attempted a 28-yard field goal which faded wide left and the Bears had a 14-13 lead heading into the half.
The Bobcats forced a punt on the Bears’ first possession of the third quarter. But the Bears’ Trey Babineaux intercepted a Brasseaux pass to end the Cats’ possession.
Church Point took possession at the Eunice 8, but the Cats managed to hold the Bears out of the end zone thanks to a great defensive play by junior Brody Gaspard, who tackled Babineaux for a three-yard loss on a fourth-and-goal at the one-yard line.
The Cats were unable to move the ball, though, and Brasseaux’s punt went for just eight yards, giving the Bears the ball at the Bobcat 16. But the Cat defenders held the Bears out the end zone, taking possession at their own 10 as the third quarter clock hit the one-minute mark.
The Cats moved the ball to their own 30 thanks to Lee’s 18-yard run. The Bears would force another punt and this time Brasseaux boomed a 50-yarder which was muffed by the Bears’ returner. The Cats recovered the muffed punt at the Bears’ 20.
A holding call against the Bears on first down moved the ball to the 15 and Lee ran 12 yards to put the ball on the three-yard line. Brasseaux was held out of the end zone on a sneak before being successful on the his next attempt. Brasseaux passed to Georrein Dupre for the two-point conversion and a 21-14 lead with 9:25 left on the clock.
The Bears drove down the field following the kickoff, but on a fourth-and-9 at the Bobcat 17, Jones slightly overthrew a reciver in the end zone to turn the ball over to the Cats with 3:54 left in the game.
The Cats could not pick up a first down, but Brasseaux’s 41-yard punt backed the Bears up at their own 35. With 1:19 left in the game, Jones tried a pass down the field that was intercepted by Dashawn Vigers and the Cats had the victory.
Lee led the Eunice rushing attack with 18 carries for 129 yards. Dupuis topped the Bears in rushing with 101 yards on 21 carries.
