Sometimes records can be deceiving.

Heading into last Friday’s game against Eunice High, LaGrange had a winless 0-5 record. But the Gators had faced teams with a combined 25-5 record, including undefeated Notre Dame, University High, Rayne and a one-loss Barbe team.

Tonight the Bobcats are  hoping to put the 19-7 upset to LaGrange behind them as they travel to tenth-ranked and undefeated Rayne.

“They were the best defense we faced all year,” EHS coach Paul Trosclair said. “We couldn’t execute properly because of our lack of focus. You put all that together and you have one big mess-up.”

The Wolves (6-0, 2-0) have grabbed wins against teams with a combined 9-26 record with Class 1-A St. Edmund the only team with a winning record at 4-2.

An upset win of their own will put the Bobcats (4-2, 2-1) back in the District 4-4A race with games against Crowley (4-2, 2-1) and Beau Chene (2-4, 1-1) left on the schedule.

Rayne has grabbed wins over St. Edmund (45-19), 2-4 North Vermilion (28-10), winless Abbeville (45-7), 2-4 Washington-Marion (35-21), 1-5 LaGrange (14-12) before the Wolves cruised to a 36-0 non-district victory over winless Morgan City.

“Our guys now realize you can’t overlook anyone,” Trosclair said. “Rayne has beat both Washington-Marion and LaGrange.

“They won some easy games but they also managed to win the tough games, so you have to give them respect for that.”

Rayne rolled up 383 yards of total offense with 249 rushing yards as Trent Duhon finished with 141 yards on 10 carries with two touchdowns.  Duhon now has 810 yards on the season with nine touchdowns on 101 carries.

Javon Cormier added 49 yards on 13 carries with two scores, while Tyler LeJeune completed 5-of-9 passes for 133 yards.

Rayne held Morgan City to just 24 yards on the night as the Wolves snared an interception and two fumble recoveries.

“This is the best rushing team we will probably play all year,” Trosclair said of the Wolves ground attack. “They have three good backs and an offensive line that averages 280 pounds.”

The Bobcats need to rekindle their offense after being held to 150 yards against LaGrange with 83 yards  through the air by Alex Richard (9-of-15, 1 INT). Richard scored on a 2-yard run in the  third period for the only Bobcat score.

“We are beat up right now with a lot of injuries,” Trosclair said. “But we are going to show up and play hard. Hopefully something good will happen.”
