Hornets edge Blue Jays, 14-13

By Tom Dodge

It was a tale of two halves between District 5-1 rivals Catholic High of Pointe Coupee and St. Edmund Thursday night.
The visiting Hornets scored twice in the first quarter and the Blue Jays pushed across two touchdowns in the second half.
It all came down to a missed extra point as CHPC grabbed a 14-13 win over St. Edmund.
“We did things that you can’t do and still win a football game,” St. Edmund head coach Andy Hargroder said. “But we still can still win the district.
“We need to refocus and start again against Westminster.”
Catholic took the opening kickoff and went 69 yards in 12 plays for the game’s first points.
Nick Carriere scored on a 1-yard run and then kicked the PAT to give the Hornets a 7-0 advantage with 6:12 left in the period.
The Blue Jays fumbled the ensuing kickoff and Hornets quickly took advantage of the turnover with a three-play drive that started at the St. Ed 45.
After two runs by Carriere, Andrew Grezaffi appeared to be on his way to the endzone when he fumbled at 8-yard line.
Hornet teammate Matthew Langlois scooped up the loose ball and scored.
Carriere’s kick pushed CHPC ahead 14-0 with 4:14 left in the first quarter.
After a punt, the Blue Jay defense stiffened as Alex Stelly recovered a Hornet fumble at the SEH 35.
The Jays were forced to punt again and on the fifth play of the Hornets’ drive, Carriere appeared to have scored on a 55-yard run but a block in teh back penalty erased the points.
St. Edmund had a chance to push points on the board late in the half when Brock Bieber recovered a fumbled punt near midfield.
But a quarterback sack and two more negative plays ended the drive at intermission.
St. Edmund stormed out of the locker room with a five-play, 64 yard scoring drive.
Threee strong runs by Luke Doucet and a quarterback plunge from Peter Miller moved the Jays closer.
Doucet then broke loose for a 42-yard touchdown scamper and Jack Brown’s PAT closed the gap to 14-7 with 9:41 left in the third period.
The Blue Jays recovered another Hornet fumble, but could not convert the turnover into points.
But on the second play of the fourth quarter, St. Edmund’s Michael Zaunbrecher recovered at the Blue Jay 41.
The 17-play drive, the longest of the season for the Jays, was extended by three fourth-down conversions as St. Edmund moved inside Catholic’s 20-yard line.
An offsides penalty moved the Jays to the Hornets’ 8 with 2:58 left in the game.
After an incomplete pass to the end zone, Peter Miller then gained four yards on a fourth-and-three to keep the drive alive.
Miller scored on the next play on a four-yard run, but a missed PAT kept the Jays behind, 14-13 with 1:44 reaminimg
After forcing a quick punt, St. Edmund had one last chance to pull out the win.
A strong punt return by Brad Miller helped the Jays begin the drive at the Hornet 35 with 1:13 left.
Peter Miller connected with James Ward for a 17-yard gain to move inside the Catholic 20.
On third down and time running out, Miller found Bieber open for a 6-yard gain to set up a last-second 22-yard field goal.
But the attempt was tipped as time expired and CHPC held on for the win.
St. Edmund (2-5, 1-1) entertains Westminster Christian Academy (4-3, 1-1) Friday, while Catholic High of Pointe Coupee (2-5, 1-1) travels to North Central.
