Lady Cats fall to Iota in home finale
It was a battle with one of the best volleyball teams in the state Tuesday when Eunice faced Iota in the Lady Bobcats’ home finale.
No. 7 Iota (26-4, 10-0) earned a 25-10, 25-10, 25-11 sweep over Eunice (1-20, 1-9).
“We played a great team,” Eunice head coach Wayne Fontent said of Iota. “I wanted to see us get better and I think we did that against the district champions.
“We set up an offense, we ran a defense,” the coach said. “We made mistakes but we also saw some success.”
In the first match, the Lady Bulldogs jumped out to a 9-2 lead, aided by aces from Taylor Dupre and Erin Bouley.
The Lady Cats rallied for three straight points including a kill by Amber Arvie. to close to the gap to 9-5.
The Lady Bulldogs mounted an 11-2 surge sparked by kills from Madison Olivier, Kendall Miller and Bouley for a 19-7 Iota advantage.
After the two teams exchanged a point, Iota went on a 5-0 run including a kill by Avery Wriborg.
Eunice scored twice late including a kill by Angelle Ortego to close the gap to 24-9 before a hit by Bouley sealed the Lady Dogs’ win.
Iota opened the second game with a 6-1 run led by three ace from Bouley.
The Lady Cats scored three straight points on Iota errors to close the margin to 6-4 but the Lady Dogs answered with a 4-0 run.
Iota began to pull away with a 6-0 surge, sparked by three kills by Olivier and two aces from Shydee Johnson.
Eunice earned two points off Iota miscues to close the gap to 19-9.
Five serves from Aymslee Johnson and a kill by Bouley helped the Lady Dogs move ahead, 23-9.
A service error gave EHS it final point as Iota closed with a kill by Bouley and a Lady Cat error.
Eunice fought early in the third set as the Lady Cats held a 4-1 advantage aided by a kill from Olivia Adamson and a dink from Raquel Bernard.
Iota responded with a 6-1 run including two kills by Morgan Lantz and another by Alayna Manuel.
Eunice took advantage of two Lady Dog errors to close the gap to 9-8.
Iota pulled away with a 10-2 surge, aided by kills from Olivier, Bouley and Manuel.
After giving up a point on an errant serve, the Lady Bulldogs closed the game with a 6-0 run.
Wriborg’ kill near the back line and two aces by Bouley increased Iota’s lead to 22-11.
Two errors by the Lady Cats and a kill by Lantz sealed the 25-11 Iota win.
Eunice concludes the season today at Beau Chene.
