LSUE rolls to 10-1 win over Des Moines

CLINTON, Mississippi - After rolling to a 16-0 win over Mott Community College to open the NJCAA Division II softball World Series, LSU Eunice cruised to a 10-1 win over Desmoines Area Community College Thursday to stay in the winners bracket.

The No. 4 Lady Bengals will take on No. 9 Labette Community College, who grabbed a 6-3 win over top-seed Phoenix College, at noon on Friday.
Lady Bears’ Sydney Weldon hit a solo home run in bottom of the fourth to avoid the shutout before

the Lady Bengals exploded for five runs in the top of the sixth inning to seal the mercy-rule win. The game sealing inning began when Maddie Edmonston (St. Amant) reached on a bunt and scored on a sacrifice by Bobbi Smith (West Ouachita).

Rebecca Skains (West Ouachita) doubled and scored on a hit by Alli Daigle (Notre Dame) to push LSUE ahead, 7-1.

Jean Marie Angelle (Cecilia) and then Jordan Hartman hit a pinch hit home run to extend the Lady Bengals’ lead to 10-1.

“I wanted to get a hit for the team,” Hartman said. “We had lost two players to injuries and it was my turn to step up.
“It was a big hit to help keep us in the winners bracket and we don’t want to give up.”

The Lady Bengals jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the top of the first, begun when Edmonston reached on an error, Skains walked and Smith hit a home run over the centerfield fence.

Smith singled to open the third inning before Molly Wilson (Castor High) hit a homer over the right field fence to push the Lady Bengals ahead, 5-0.
Abigail Leonards (Iota) earned the win as she allowed one run on five hits with two walks.

Jordan Dougherty (Alberta, Canada) closed the game as she allowed one walk and a walk.

Edmonston went 2-for-4 with two runs scored, while Skains went 2-for-3 with a double, a walk and two runs scored.

Smith went 2-for-2 with a home run, a walk and two run scored.
