Father allegedly scalded four-year-old in hot bath when she couldn't write "B"

Step-mother booked as accessory

A four-year-old unable to write the letter “B” was allegedly scalded in a hot bath by her father. He and her step-mother are charged in the cruelty case.
The child has been admitted to the Baton Rouge Burn Center for second degree burns. She was first brought to Our Lady of Lourdes Medical Center in Lafayette, however the staff at Lourde’s felt she would be better cared for at a specialized burn center. The child has been fitted with a feeding tube. She is said to be running high fevers, has difficulty walking and is traumatized by pain. She is reported to be scheduled for treatment which could last weeks, possibly longer. She is expected to fully recover physically, according to the St. Landry Parish Sheriff’s Office.
On Jan 11 2015, the child’s mother called 911 and reported that the girl had suffered burns from a scalding bath while under the care of her biological father, identified as Joshua Babineaux, of James St., in Sunset.
Over the course of several days, St. Landry Parish Juvenile Detectives determined that the child had been bathed in scalding water on Jan. 10. Interviews with the child indicated that the hot bath was the end result of a problem that began when she was unable to write the letter “B” while being tutored by her father.
The investigating detective determined that the father became angered and applied some form of corporal punishment, which in turn caused the d girl to urinate on herself. The scalding bath allegedly followed.
On Jan. 20 Babineaux was arrested on the charge of Second Degree Cruelty to a Juvenile. He was released on bond of $3,500.00 dollars and is currently awaiting trial.
According to the Detective, the child’s burns were treated at the father’s’residence for an entire night and day before the mother was contacted. After the hot bath incident, the child’s stepmother, Tabatha Babineaux, cared for the child’s blistered back, bottom, and legs.
It was determined the burns were severe enough that a reasonable person would have sought emergency medical treatment immediately after the bath, thus Tabatha Babineaux was arrested on the charge of Accessory After the Fact (to Second Degree Cruelty to a Juvenile.) She was released on bond of $3,500.00 dollars and is currently awaiting trial.
