SUV veers across highway, hits tree, burns, driver dead

A Baton Rouge man died Friday afternoon when his SUV left the road, hit a tree and burst into flames.
State Police said the accident happened about 1:30 p.m. on La. 40 near Global Wildlife in Tangipahoa Parish.
Preliminary investigation revealed that Cory Castro, 34, was operating a 2007 Chevrolet Suburban eastbound. Castro, for reasons under investigation, veered left, crossed the center line, traveled off of the roadway, and struck a tree. The Suburban ignited upon impact and soon became fully engulfed in flames.
Due to the fire, it is unknown if Castro was restrained or if impairment was a factor. A blood sample was collected from him so a toxicological analysis can be performed at the LSP Crime Lab. Those results are pending as this crash remains under investigation.
