Central Middle School students learn about La. oil and gas industry

The MOLU-Mobile Oilfield Learning Unit (Science Stations) was on campus at Central Middle School Friday, Sept. 19.
The six science unit exhibits provided students with hands-on experiments and science games.
Each student was given an informative hand-out booklet and asked to fill-in blanks with their answers learned at each station or exhibit.
Students were guided and assisted at each station by Michael Nevels, Owner/STEM Educational Specialist. Students had the opportunity to view and learn more about the oil and gas industry in Louisiana.
The six different stations/exhibits included: Station 1: You Can Be An Engineer?, Station 2: A Closer Look At Micro organisms, Station 3: Can You Operate A Robotic Arm? The Seismology Game, Station 4: Roller Cone Steel Bit Body, Do These Core Samples Contail Oil? Explore for Oil?, Station 5: Pass The Petroleum? Are These Products Made From Oil? Station 6: How Hot Is Your Hand? Geologists use equipment to detect color variations in rocks. How Thick Is The Oil? Viscosity is commonly known as resistance to flow; and The Carbon Cycle.
Principal Ranolviaun Landry added, “Our students at Central Middle were afforded a unique opportunity to learn more about the oil and gas industry on campus.
“The exhibits provided in-depth information about vast energy resources available beneath the oceans.
“The hands-on learning concept of this mobile unit serves a dual purpose by presenting the information to students in a user-friendly format. It also sparked curiosity for them to begin exploring ideas of future careers that involve science, energy, and technology that coincide with oil and gas industry.
This was a wonderful experience for our students.”
