Online survey names strong communicator as top quality needed for superintendent

Online survey respondents selected “strong communicator” as the desired characteristic of an effective superintendent.
More than 75 percent of 1,373 responses picked a strong communicator in speaking, listening and writing.
The survey results were reported at Thursday’s special meeting of the St. Landry Parish School Board in Opelousas.
The survey was online from Aug. 26 to Sept. 11.
Other survey selections for top characteristics included:
70 percent, Is strongly committed to a “student first” policy;
57 percent, Is able to work cooperatively with the state board and keeps district informed:
56 percent, Is able to work with legislators on key topics and can lead an organization throughout the legislative process;
45 percent, Has demonstrated strong leadership skills in previous positions;
40 percent, Demonstrates ability to understand and integrate instructional and administrative technology;
39 percent, Is willing to listen to input, but is a decision maker;
38 percent, Possesses excellent people skills and can present a positive image of Louisiana education;
38 percent, Is able to delegate authority appropriately while maintaining accountability;
37 percent, Has experience working with employee representative groups/unions; and
37 percent, Demonstrates the ability to work with the media.
