Jays grab win over Iota

In game dominated by the defenses, the Blue Jayss won the battle for field position and finally scored the game’s only points in the fourth quarter.
After forcing Iota to punt two plays into the final period, St. Edmund went 37 yards in nine plays.
On fourth-and-1 at the Iota 13, Peter Miller gained four yards to keep the drive alive.
Then on fourth-and-goal that Bulldog 1, Miller pushed his way into the end zone for the touchdown.
Jack Brown made the extra point as the Blue Jays led 7-0 with 7:19 left in the game.
The Bulldogs fumbled on the fifth play of the next drive and Blue Jay defender Alex Stelly recovered the ball at the St. Edmund 43.
After the Blue Jays were forced to punt, Iota had one final chance with 3:19 left in the game.
But on third-and-15, Brad Miller intercepted Kameron Aucoin’s pass with 2:00 left to help seal the Blue Jay win.
“It was a great win for the program,” St. Ed head coach Andy Hargroder said as he picked up his first win at St. Edmund.
“The defense played lights out,” he said. “We never quit.
“At the end I told the guys we were going to line up and push it,” he said. “We were going to see who wanted it most.”
The Blue Jay defense stood tall early in the game as Iota was driving on its first possession.
On a fourth down incomplete pass, the defense was flagged for holding to move Iota to the Blue Jay 9.
But on the next fourth down at the Blue Jay 4, the St. Edmund defense held and forced an incomplete pass.
After both teams exchanged punts, the Blue Jays moved the ball to the Iota 30 before the drive was stopped on fourth down.
After the two teams exchanged punts again in the second quarter, the battle for field position continued when Brad Miller recovered a Bulldog fumble at the Iota 28.
But after two penalties, the Blue Jay drive died at the Bulldogs 37 on a batted fourth-down pass.
St. Edmund’s Peter Miller recovered another Iota fumble at the Bulldog 37 with 20 seconds left in the half, but the Jays couldn’t take advantage of the field position.
Iota took the second-half kickoff and moved 30 yards in nine plays, sparked by several strong runs by Alex Frey.
But on fourth-and 15 at the Blue Jay 31, Austin Miller and Jack Brown sacked Iota quarterback Aucoin to halt the drive.
After the two teams exhanged four punts, the Blue Jays finally put the game winning drive together.
Luke Doucet, Murphy Richard, Jack Miller, Peter Miller and Brad Miller all touched the ball on the nine-play drive.
The home side exploded with cheers as the canon sounded on Peter Miller’s touchdown.
The Blue Jays finished with 127 yards of total offense, while hold Iota to 74 yards on the night.
Iota fumbled the ball six times and lost three as St. Edmund fumbled three times but did not turn the ball over.
Aucoin finished 8-of-14 for 55 yards.
Cade Covalt caught four passes for 44 yards, while Hunter Andrus had two receptions for three yards.
Doucet finished with 53 yards on 11 carries, while Brock Bieber added 32 yards on seven carries.
St. Edmund (1-1) travels to Opelousas Catholic (2-0), 34-27 winners over Central Catholic of Morgan City.
Iota (0-2) celebrates homecoming against Lake Arthur (2-0) coming off a 48-7 win over Lake Charles College Prep.
