Jobless rates up
Unemployment rates rose in June in the Tri-Parish area as the number of people in the workforce declined.
There were 73,017 people in the workforce in St. Landry, Evangeline and Acadia parishes, which was a 2.3 percent drop from the 74,738 people a year ago in June, according to not-seasonally-adjusted data from the federal Bureau of Labor Statistics.
The workforce includes the number of employed and unemployed.
The state not-seasonally-adjusted unemployment rate in June was 7 percent, up from 6.1 percent in May and from 6.9 percent in June 2015.
June Tri-Parish employment numbers for June were:
— St. Landry Parish: 9.3 percent, up from 8.2 percent in May and 8.4 percent in June 2015.
There were 31,394 people working in St. Landry Parish, down from 31,811 a year ago in June.
— Evangeline Parish: 8.7 percent, up from 7.1 percent in May and 8.2 percent in June 2015.
There were 12,118 people working, down from 12,203 in June 2015.
— Acadia Parish: 8.3 percent, up from 7.6 percent in May and 7.5 percent in June 2015.
Unemployment rates rose over the month in all of Louisiana’s metropolitan statistical areas in June.
Not-seasonally-adjusted unemployment rates for metropolitan areas in June were as follows:
— Alexandria: 7.2 percent, up from 6.2 percent in May and unchanged from June 2015;
— Baton Rouge: 6 percent, up from 5.2 percent in May and down from 6.1 percent in June 2015;
— Hammond: 8.1 percent, up from 6.8 percent in May and unchanged from June 2015;
— Houma: 7.4 percent, up from 6.6 percent in May and from 6.1 percent in June 2015;
— Lafayette: 8 percent, up from 7.2 percent in May and from 7 percent in June 2015;
— Lake Charles: 5.6 percent, up from 4.9 percent in May and down from 5.8 percent in June 2015;
— Monroe: 7 percent, up from 6.2 percent in May and down from 7.4 percent in June 2015;
— New Orleans: 6.4 percent, up from 5.5 percent in May and down from 6.6 percent in June 2015;
— Shreveport: 7.4 percent, up from 6.4 percent in May and down from 7.6 percent in June 2015.
Not-seasonally-adjusted data represent a snapshot of employment but are not adjusted for seasonal factors, like the closure of schools for the summer.
