Black cruises past Gold in LSUE Fall Series opener
In the opening game of the 2014 LSU Eunice baseball team’s annual Fall World Series, the Black team beat the Gold team 12-0 on Wednesday night to grab a 1-0 series lead.
Right-hander Mitch Sewald earned the win for the Black squad, tossing four innings and allowing two hits and a walk while striking out three batters. Freshman Nick Duthu struck out two of the six batters he faced out of the bullpen for team Black as well.
At the plate, sophomore Brennan Bozeman and redshirt freshman Mark Fontenot led the Black team, as each finished 3-for-4 with two runs scored, with Fontenot driving in three RBIs and Bozeman adding two RBIs of his own. Freshman Nick Coomes finished with two hits, two RBIs, three runs scored and a stolen base, and fellow freshman Zack LaFleur tallied two hits of his own for the Black squad.
Sophomore starting pitcher Zack Hamilton was saddled with the loss for the Gold team, allowing eight hits and seven runs in his three innings of work while striking out three batters and walking three additional hitters.
Freshman Jacob Barton tossed a scoreless inning of relief, striking out one batter, while redshirt freshman Steven Sensley finished 2-for-3 at the plate with a pair of singles to lead team Gold at the plate.
Game two is tonight at 6:00 p.m. at Bengal Stadium.
