Cornerstones of community
I must have passed in front of the cornerstone at the post office a hundred times but never really noticed it or stopped to read it before now.
It’s located on the southwest corner of the building and can easily be seen when you walk from the parking area to the lobby.
That sent us on yet another wild goose chase around town to see how many others we could find.
The oldest one, so far, is at the American Legion home on Park Avenue. It’s dated 1934. That one interested me because both of my grandfathers worked on the building as it was going up. One did the brick work and the other did metalwork and welding.
The post office one is dated 1938. The Harmony Lodge on Park has a 1948 date on it and the Woodmen of the World building on North Second is dated 1952.
There are others but so far, we are interested in those prior to the 1950’s, as anything coming after that is pretty well documented in the newspaper.
The Methodist Church on Sixth Street has two, neither old but denoting the age of the church itself, which dates back to the year the city of Eunice was founded, 1894.
One can only wonder how many others there are around the city, yet to be found.
Good history project for someone with an interest in local history.
Cornerstones are sort of like the birth certificates of buildings.
If you find one, let us know. We’d be happy to photograph it.
Georgie Manuel.
