IRS doesn’t call to demand money

The St. Landry Parish Sheriff’s Office wants to warn all Acadiana residents that professional criminal “scammers” are hard at work trying to steal from our citizens.
Every year, during tax season, law-abiding people receive telephone calls from a criminal posing as an IRS agent, who demands money and can be very persuasive, the sheriff’s news release stated.
Even legitimate sounding threats of lawsuits have been reported, the sheriff’s news release stated.
The scam effort happens across the country and is usually originated overseas, the sheriff’s news release stated.
The sophistication of the scam can be quite impressive, including caller ID numbers listed as government agencies and different criminals playing roles as “agents” or “supervisors,” the sheriff’s news release stated.
The IRS will never contact anyone by telephone, they strictly use certified mail to communicate.
There is no need to contact your local authority if you are suspicious of a scam telephone call. However, if you fall for the criminal’s trickery and actually send money to them, definitely file a police report, the sheriff’s news release stated.
Sheriff Bobby J. Guidroz stated, “These scammers are the lowest of the low. They frequently target our citizens that have land lines, knowing that land lines are more likely to belong to elderly citizens who have savings and may be more susceptible to persuasive con-artists. Please do not fall for their lies. The IRS will never call your telephone, period.”
