School hit by bomb hoax

Staff Report

A note stating the school was going to blow up in an hour forced the evacuation of Eunice Junior High School Thursday afternoon.
Eunice Police Chief Randy Fontenot said the crudely written note was reported from a school employee at 1:36 p.m.
The note was found on door on the south side of the main gymnasium.
“Some people did report seeing a man on campus wearing a hoodie,” Fontenot said, but those reports have not been confirmed.
Parents were allowed to pick up their children early from the evacuation point, which police do not identify.
Fontenot said the firefighters and city marshals assisted police and school personnel in making what could have been chaotic event orderly.
The evacuation and early dismissal also effected Eunice Elementary and Eunice Vo-Tech, he said.
The bomb hoax is considered terrorism and if a adult is convicted the penalty is a fine up to $15,000 and a 15-year prison term, Fontenot said.
For a juvenile, a terrorism conviction could mean a jail sentence until they are 21 years old, he said. However, a juvenile may face prosecution as an adult, he said.
This was the second bomb hoax at a Eunice school.
On Sept. 17, Central Middle School was evacuated after a bomb threat was found in a bathroom at the school.
