Sheriff: Drug suspect loses fight with deputy

A 28-year-old man who is called a crack dealer by St. Landry Parish Sheriff Bobby Guidroz lost a fight with a deputy at 3:30 a.m. Tuesday on the I-49 Service Road.
Lynick J. Birotte, no address given, was stopped near Rachal Lane in Opelousas by Patrol Sgt. Kevin Serialle Sr., a news release stated.
Birotte had crashed a rental car into a ditch, the news release stated.
Serialle investigated and found Birotte did not have documents authorizing him to be in possession of the rental vehicle, had no driver’s license, had large amounts of cash and a plastic bag full of crack rocks, the news release stated.
“The busted drug dealer could have complied with Sgt. Serialle’s verbal commands to submit peacefully to arrest. Instead, he chose to fight the law… and the law won. No injuries were reported,” the news release stated.
Birotte was taken to the St. Landry Parish jail.
He was booked on charges of careless operation of a motor vehicle; no driver’s license; obstruction of justice; possession of crack cocaine with intent to distribute; resisting an officer by violence; battery of a police officer; and transactions Involving proceeds from drug transactions
If convicted on all charges, he faces up to 20 years at hard labor and $30,000 in fines.
Birotte is being held in the St. Landry Parish jail on a $37,000 bail, pending trial, the news release stated.
Guidroz stated in the news release, “This young man has made some very bad career choices in his life. Dealing drugs in St. Landry Parish will not be tolerated. Choosing to fight one of our deputies will land you in jail or worse. Sgt. Serialle demonstrated professional restraint and used just enough force to win the fight and make the arrest. Every day, the national news covers a story about excessive force by police. This deputy was alone on a dark road at 3:30 in the morning when a crack dealer decided to fight. This event could have ended with serious injury or death. Cops face dangers like this every day and Sgt. Serialle demonstrated exactly how our deputies are trained to respond. If you intend to sell drugs in our parish, prepare to go to jail. If you intend to fight one of my deputies… prepare to lose.” Guidroz added, “The deputies undergo boxing and street fight training so the night stick, pepper spray, firearm or stun gun can be avoided and used only when absolutely necessary.”
