Blue Jays open district on the road
Last year, the Blue Jays were one controversial call at the goal line as time expired against Pointe Coupee Central from winning the District 5-1A title.
With PCC now closed, St. Edmund (2-3) is looking to make a run to the title beginning with Friday’s trip to Catholic High of Pointe Coupee.
“The district race is wide-open,” St. Edmund head coach Thomas David said. “We are all evenly matched.
“It is going to come down to which team who protects the football that gives themselves the best chance to win.”
Sacred Heart of Ville Platte (2-3) opens district at North Central (1-4), while False River Academy (2-3) has the week off
CHPC opened the season with losses to Ascension Catholic (41-21) and Hanson (32-6) before wins over East Iberville (59-0) and Delcambre (42-21).
CHPC fell 33-7 to Opelousas Catholic last week.
The Hornets finished with 256 yards in the air against OC as Jonas Guichet completed 26-of-52 passes.
“Their quarterback is a big kid who throws the ball pretty well,” David said. “They are going to stretch your defense and force you to defend the whole field.
“If you have a lapse they can make a big play,” the coach said. “They are going to force us to stay sound on defense.”
On the defensive side of the ball, the Vikings exploded for 242 yards on the ground and 140 yards passing against CPHC.
Earlier this season, the Vikings had 161 yards rushing and 120 passing in OC’s 46-32 win over the Blue Jays.
St. Edmund quarterback Drew Brown completed 25-of-47 passes for 317 yards against OC.
Last week, the Blue Jays cruised to a 44-0 win over Westminster Christian Academy.
St. Edmund finished with 460 yards of total offense while limiting the Crusaders to 111 yards.
“We cleaned up a lot of things we just need to carry it forward,” David said. “We need to continue to improve.”
