Bobcats grab two Metro wins
MAMOU – The Eunice Bobcats battled back from an early deficit to post a 12-6 victory over the Mamou Green Demons in action here Tuesday in the Acadiana Metro League.
After Mamou starting pitcher Chandler Lafleur shutout the Bobcats in the first inning, the Demons tallied two runs off Eunice starter Wes Hebert to take a 2-0 lead. Austin Fontenot’s sacrifice fly produced the first run and the second scored on a two-out single.
The Cats cut the lead to 2-1 as Hebert singled to open the second inning and advanced to second base on a wild pitch. After advancing to third base on a grounder by A. P. Sonnier, Hebert scored on a sacrifice fly by Caleb Taylor.
The Cats took the lead with three runs in the third inning. Christian Lejeune doubled to open the inning and moved to third on a sacrifice bunt by Alec Trosclair.
Gunner Fontenot drove in a run with a grounder that was misplayed, then later scored as Logan Manuel reached base on an error for a 4-2 lead.
Eunice increased its lead to 9-4 thanks to a five-run fourth inning. Key hits in the inning came from Alex Richard, Lejeune, and Jordan Comeaux. Lejeune, Trosclair, Fontenot, Sonnier, and Comeaux drove in runs during the inning.
But the Demons closed the gap to 9-6 with two runs in the bottom of the fourth. The Demons had a chance to score even more runs with the bases loaded and none out, but relief pitcher Alec Trosclair struck out the next three batters to end the inning.
The Cats made it 10-6 with a run in the fifth thanks to a run-scoring double by Lejeune after Richard reached on an error, but Trosclair ran into problems in the sixth, loading the bases with none out. Lejeune relieved at that point and induced Lafleur to ground into a double play from pitcher to catcher to first baseman. Lejeune retired the next batter to end the threat.
The Cats added two more runs in the seventh on a two-run single by Trosclair to take a 12-6 lead. Lejeune would shutout the Demons in the bottom of the seventh to secure the victory.
The Bobcats were led offensively by Lejeune had four hits and two RBI. Richard added two hits and three runs scored. Hebert, Comeaux, Trosclair, and Lejeune all saw mound duty for the Cats. The four pitchers limited the Demons to six hits and five earned runs. The foursome issued nine walks and struck out nine.
Eunice will host Notre Dame on Monday and travel to Rayne on Wednesday to face the Wolves.
EHS 11, Jennings 1
The Bobcats used a six-run third inning to break open a close game on their way to an 11-1 victory over the Jennings Bulldogs in Acadiana Metro League action Monday night at Bobcat Field.
The Bobcats opened the scoring with a two-run first inning as Gunner Fontenot reached on an error to lead off the inning. Logan Manuel was hit by a pitch and both runners advanced a base on a wild pitch. Jordan Comeaux’s sacrifice fly scored Fontenot before a single by A. P. Sonnier drove home Manuel for a 2-0 lead.
Fontenot’s double to lead off sparked the six-run third inning. Manuel followed with a bunt single and Wes Hebert was hit by a pitch to load the bases.
A run scored when Sonnier was hit by a pitch.
Caleb Taylor kept the inning going with a two-run single and Alex Richard followed with a two-run single of his own. Logan Dischler singled to move Richard to third base. Christian Lejeune’s infield grounder scored Richard with the sixth run of the inning to put the Cats up 8-0.
The Cats scored their ninth run in the fourth as Manuel reached on an error, stole second, and advanced to third base on a single by Hebert. Manuel later scored on a wild pitch. The Cats added their final two runs in the sixth inning without benefit of a hit.
Three Bobcat pitchers combined to hold the Bulldogs’ offense in check until Jennings pushed across a run in the sixth. Manuel started the game and limited the Bulldogs to one hit over two innings. He struck out one and did not issue a walk, but did hit two batters. Sonnier worked two scoreless innings, allowing two hits and walking three. He recorded one strikeout. Lejeune pitched the final two innings, allowing four hits and one run. He struck out five and did not issue a walk.
Taylor led Eunice offensively with two hits and two RBI. Lejeune and Fontenot had doubles, while Hebert, Sonnier, Richard, Dischler, and Manuel added singles.
