Rayne sweeps Bobcats
RAYNE – The Eunice High Lady Bobcats rallied to make it interesting late against the Rayne High Lady Wolves here Friday night.
But outscoring the Lady Wolves 27-21 in the second half couldn’t make up for 28-8 differential in the first half as the Lady Cats dropped a 49-35 decision.
The Lady Cats saw their overall record fall to 12-6 and their district mark drop to 3-3.
The Lady Cats will open the second half of the 4-4A campaign on Friday when they host the Crowley High Ladies.
Coach Chester Randel’s Rayne team improved its record to 15-6 overall and to 5-0 in district play.
The Lady Wolves will complete its first round of district play against Crowley High on Tuesday.
The Lady Cats struggled against the pressure defense of the Lady Wolves in the second quarter.
Eunice actually led for nearly seven minutes of the first quarter thanks to a drive by Ashley Washington in the opening minute of the game.
But the Lady Wolves made five free throws for a 5-2 lead at the end of the quarter.
A field goal by Kate McLemore cut the lead to 5-4 at 6:35 of the second quarter, but the Lady Wolves went on an 12-0 run to build a 17-4 lead. By halftime, Rayne held a 28-8 lead.
Behind the shooting of sophomore Dashaya Vigers, the Lady Cats managed a 17-7 advantage in the third quarter to cut the lead to 35-25 going into the final quarter.
The Lady Cats actually cut the lead to 39-31 with 3:32 left on the clock, but Rayne outscored the Lady Cats 10-4 over the remainder of the game to preserve the victory.
Vigers led all scorers in the game with 22 points, 18 of which came in the second half. Hali Jack added five and McLemore had four, with Beulah Bradley and Washington finishing with two apiece.
Charlasha Dugas led Rayne with 21 points. Tori Carrierre added 11 points for Rayne.
Rayne 49, Eunice 33
The Rayne High Wolves used defensive pressure in the second half to pull away from the Eunice High Bobcats on the way to a 49-33 victory here Friday night in 4-4A action.
Led by Paul Hebert’s two 3-point field goals, the Bobcats enjoyed an 8-3 lead at the end of the first quarter.
The Cats maintained the lead until the 1:22 mark of the second quarter when the Wolves’ Byron Mouton hit a jumper to give Rayne a 16-15 lead. The Cats trailed by an 18-17 margin after a drive by Travis Godfrey in the final seconds of the first half.
Rayne, which moved to 5-12 overall and 1-2 in district play, began to gradually pull away in the third quarter. Forcing from the Cats, the Wolves entered the final quarter with a 34-24 lead.
Rayne finished strong in the fourth quarter, with its defensive pressure forcing numerous turnovers as they eventually put up 15 points to just nine for the Cats over the final eight minutes.
Jerwaski Thomas led the Cats in scoring with 14 points. Hebert finished with six, while Godfrey and Kevin Williams finished with four apiece.
The Wolves were led by Tedrick Fontenot with 18 points. Mouton finished with nine points for the Wolves.
The Bobcats, now 6-15 overall and 0-3 in district play, have an open date on Tuesday. Next action for the Cats will come Friday when they host the Crowley High Gents.
