Award-winning fiddle teacher has fall classes at LSU Eunice
Henry Hample, who recently won the 2014 Excellence Award from the Cajun French Music Association for his ongoing work as a Cajun music instructor, will begin a new semester of Cajun fiddle classes at Louisiana State University at Eunice on Tuesday, Sept. 23. Offered by LSU Eunice’s Office of Continuing Education, the classes are open to the general public, including both adults and kids ages 10 and older.
Originally from New York, Hample moved to Grand Coteau in 2007. He has played fiddle for Cajun Music Hall of Famers Jesse Lege, Sheryl Cormier, August Broussard, and many others, receiving a nomination for the CFMA's Fiddler of the Year award in 2010.
He teaches music at the Academy of the Sacred Heart in Grand Coteau, and is also the founding director of the Louisiana Folk Roots Cajun & Creole Summer Camp for Kids in Lafayette.
Two separate classes, Beginning Cajun Fiddle and Intermediate Cajun Fiddle, will meet at LSU Eunice every Tuesday evening from Sept. 23 through Dec. 9. Beginning Cajun Fiddle (6-7 p.m.) will assume no prior experience, while Intermediate Cajun Fiddle (7-8 p.m.) will teach a solid repertoire of popular two-steps and waltzes.
The registration fee for either course is $100. Pre-registration is required, and participants must bring their own fiddle. To register, call (337) 550-1390, or log on to www.lsue.edu/continuing.
