Cajun Fiddle classes to start at LSU Eunice

Henry Hample, who is featured on an upcoming solo CD by Lisa Trahan (of the Magnolia Sisters) and plays with several other Cajun bands, will begin teaching a new semester of Cajun fiddle classes on Tuesday, Feb. 24. Offered by the Office of Continuing Education at Louisiana State University at Eunice, the classes are open to the general public, including both adults and kids ages 10 and older.
Originally from New York, Hample moved to Grand Coteau in 2007. He has played fiddle for Cajun Music Hall of Famers Jesse Lege, Sheryl Cormier, August Broussard, and many others, receiving the 2014 Excellence Award from the Cajun French Music Association, a rarity for a musician from out of state. He teaches music full-time at the Academy of the Sacred Heart in Grand Coteau, and is also the founding director of the Cajun & Creole Summer Camp for Kids at Vermilionville in Lafayette.
Two separate classes, Beginning Cajun Fiddle and Intermediate Cajun Fiddle, will meet at LSUE’s Continuing Education Building every Tuesday night from Feb. 24 through May 12. Beginning Cajun Fiddle (6:00-7:00 p.m.) will assume no prior experience, while Intermediate Cajun Fiddle (7:00-8:00 p.m.) will teach a solid repertoire of popular two-steps and waltzes.
The registration fee for either course is $100. Pre-registration is required, and participants must bring their own fiddle.
To register, call 550-1390, or log on to www.lsue.edu/continuing.
