East Elementary students celebrate American Education Week

East Elementary School celebrated American Education Week Nov. 17-21 with different activities for all students.
Each day was signified with an educational theme and history. Monday was declared “American Education Makes Team East an ALL STAR team”. History – In 1635 Boston Latin School opens its doors as the first public secondary school. The school still teaches a contemporary classical education. In 1647, Massachusetts required teaching in all towns of over 20 people. The law did not state who would do the teaching.
East students had an activity sheet to complete, with lower classmates a coloring sheet.
Tuesday was “Team East makes SMART plays with Safety on the Bus” In history: In 1751, the American Academy was founded by Ben Franklin. Curriculum was geared to prepare students for employment. Academics eventually replaced the Latin Grammar Schools and some schools admitted women. Activity coloring sheet was a Bus Driver followed by numbers activity sheet. Students also had to complete on the sheet how to keep safe on a bus.
Wednesday was named “American Education is Right for Team East” with a history lesson: In 1918, all states have laws requiring mandatory school attendance for children through elementary school. In 1954, Brown vs Topeka Board of Education reversed “separate but equal” doctrine. It forced integration of the US for all schools for all children, no matter what the color of their skin. Students had the opportunity to draw a picture of their favorite thing about school, and write a paragraph or sentences about their favorite thing about school.
Thursday was “American Education is a Sweet treat for Team East” with history information: In 1965, the Elementary and Secondary Education Act increased federalization of education including Head Start, free lunches, and special education. It made a huge impact on the public school system. Students had activity sheets to “choose the work tool,” and “Complete the Pattern.”
Friday was declared “Team East has a Ball with American Education” with a history lesson: In 1975, the Education for All Handicapped Children Act stated that all physically challenged students are entitled to a fair and appropriate public education.
Winners in each grade level were named for their creativity.
