Fruge named winner of St. Edmund High Senior Legacy project

Among the top awards given during St. Edmund High Academic Pep Rally held May 3 was the Senior Legacy project winner.
John Hansen Fruge was named the winner of Senior Legacy project. Fruge was among nine top finalists.
In September of last year St. Edmund High English IV students were required, for first time ever, to participate in a project, The Legacy Project.
English IV teachers David Pulling and Megan Bertrand explained fully what the Legacy Project was to be about, and all requirements of the project for students to complete for a grade.
Pulling added, about the project, “What’s the best reason to be a member of the 2016 graduating class at St. Ed’s? The Legacy Project.”
“A Legacy is something of value handed down from the past, as from an ancestor or predessor.”
St. Ed IV students were required to do a legacy, a gift, and pass it onto the St. Edmund School community before graduation.
Pulling said, “This means you will do something lasting to better the school environment and/or school community which will be enjoyed for years to come.  During the school year, you will be encouraged to design a task based upon your sense of what is most needed by your school community.”
The requirements and major components of the Legacy Project included:
–A student-written project proposal reviewed and approved by a panel of faculty consultants.
–20 hours of hands-on, career-oriented community service under the direction of an adult mentor selected by the student.
–A formal research paper responding to an essential question stemming from the community service experience.
–A portfolio collection that chronicles the year-long experience of reading, reflecting, researching, and writing.
–A formal project exhibit and presentation to faculty, staff, and community leaders in April and to the rising junior class in May.
Fruge was awarded a $250 scholarship and the school will match the scholarship to contribute back to the school.
Fruge’s Senior Legacy project was to improve the St. Edmund lab and science department. He said, “My senior legacy was to increase the quality of the St.Edmund lab and science department.
“This was an issue close to my heart and something I thought would be extremely important in increasing the schools quality as a whole. In my legacy I covered the most important issues affecting this area and gave two speeches and presentations on the subject. I gave them at school and at LSUE.”
Fruge’s teacher is Megan Bertrand.
Senior Legacy project finalists included, Nicole Bertrand, Shelbi Faul, Patricia Hull, Abby Brown, Dana Lejeune, Caroline Fontenot, Hunter Thibodeaux and Heidi Bieber. Each finalist received a $50 gift card from Walmart.
