Junior and high school students can win a trip and cash

EUNICE – Commander Terry Matte of the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post #8971 announces the kick-off of the 74th year of the VFW and its Auxiliary Patriots’ Pen competition.
Local junior high school students have the opportunity to compete for thousands of dollars and a trip to Washington, D.C.
Students begin by competing at the local Post level with a deadline of Nov. 1.
Post winners advance to District and then the first place District winner advances to state competition. The top 46 National winners all receive at least $500. The first-place National award is currently $5,000 plus an all-expense paid trip to Washington, D.C., for winner and a parent or guardian.
Students must write their own 300 to 400 typewritten word essay on the theme for 2016-2017, “The America I Believe In”.
Entry forms are at local junior high school or at the local VFW Post.

Post winners advance to District and then the first place District winner advances to Department of La. (state) winners and will receive an all expense trip to Washington, D.C. Feb. 27-March 2, 2017, to tour the city, the top scholarship being at $30,000.
Record an original 3 to 5 minute essay on audio CD or a flash drive on the theme for 2016-2017 “My Responsibility to America”.
