The 23rd Annual Back To School Fun Day, sponsored by the Parents’ Reach Out Club and Black Men Make A Difference, was held Saturday at the Southeast Neighborhood Center.
A program themed “A Mind is a Terrible Thing to Waste, Don’t Waste Yours,” of singing, special greetings, a poem, and a Back To School guest speaker, was available for all attendees to hear.
Among the Fun Day program and displayed on tables free to school children were back to school supplies, uniforms, and book sacks. All of Back to School items were donated and provided by various donors, individuals, churches, businesses, stores, civic clubs, organizations, in Eunice.
Some of the program included a musical selection “Lift Every Voice,” led by Clifton Lemelle of Eunice; a welcome extended by Josi Lemelle, Petite Miss Dance of Texas queen;
Germaine Simpson, Councilwoman of Ward 2 gave a Back To School message to all students, and encouraged all students, “To be your best and strive to achieve and do well in school.”
Alaiyah Anderson sang a solo, “The King”.
Samaj Bradley, Mr. NAUW, read his poem and a message meaning, “Yes, You can do it.” for all students returning to school.
Guest speaker was Pastor Caleb Semien of Word Ministries in Eunice. Rev. Semien spoke and encouraged all students to strive to do their best in school.
He added, “Going along with the theme of this “A Mind Is a Terrible Thing To Waste... this is true, and especially with our children returning to school.
“As a child and teenager I was not happy to go to school. However, as I speak today, I want to encourage you. School is necessary, an education is important and necessary for growth and maturity.”
“School can become difficult, and tough at times. However, to achieve and get anything in life, it comes with a cost, and a commitment.
“School was not easy for me, but, I learned as I studied and worked hard, I accomplished and finished with a great education behind me
Rev. Semien also spoke to the young students adding, “The first thing to becoming successful is to believe.. and believe in yourself and believe you can do it. You can do it, and you can accomplish it.”
“Learn how to stick with it. And go through it, you will not regret it.”
At the conclusion of the program, distribution of school supplies, uniforms, and booksacks were given.
