Stevens celebrates 99th birthday
Edith Scott Stevens celebrated her 99th birthday on Dec. 22, 2015. With joy and thanksgiving, family and friends gathered at her home to honor and shower Mrs. Stevens with love and appreciation.
Edith Scott Stevens was born in Opelousas on Dec. 22, 1916. She was the first born to Louvenia Pickney and Willie Scott, Sr. Edith was the oldest of 17 siblings, and took on adult responsibilities early in life. As young as age 7, Edith stood in a chair at the stove cooking for her siblings while her parents worked. After her mother died in childbirth, Edith helped raise her brothers and sister.
On Dec. 14, 1935, Edith married Calvin Stevens of Ville Platte. Edith and Calvin were blessed with 10 children: the late Louvenia Fontenot (L.D.) of Houston, Texas; the late Victoria Stevens of Eunice; J.C. Stevens (Betty) of Anahuac, Texas; the late LeeAnna Hanchette (Harrison) of Baytown, Texas; the late Daniel Stevens of Eunice; the late Calvin Stevens, Jr. (Myrtle) of Liberty, Texas; Mercedes Joseph (Landry) of Baytown, Texas; Will C. Stevens (Leola) of Eunice; Patricia A. Flowers (W.A.) of Trenton, New Jersey; and LouAnna Collins (James) of Baytown, Texas.
“Mother Stevens,” as she is known to many, chose not to remarry after her husband’s death in 1980. However, she dedicated her time to caring for her father and countless others. To many in the community she is known as confidant, mother, sister and friend as she has unselfishly offered her time, prayers and profound words.
She has a unique way of finding humor in situations, and encouraging others with words like “Trust in the Lord, baby, He’ll see you through.” Embodying nearly a century of life lessons and wisdom, Edith Scott Stevens continues to live in the fullness of God’s grace at her home in Eunice where she is loved and respected by her five children, 26 grandchildren, 56 great-grandchildren, 27 great-great-grandchildren, one great-great-great-grandchild, nieces, nephews, and friends; as well as her dedicated caregivers, thoughtful neighbors and supportive community members.
