Summer program, 'Read Like a Detective'

Several elementary students spent a few weeks this summer in a Summer Reading Camp: “Read Like a Detective” that was a joint project of the St. Landry Parish Enrichment Program and LSU Eunice’s Endowed Professorship. The two endowed professors, Dr. Mary Leslie and Angela Greaud, worked with the students to help them become better readers. Their endowed professorship program is entitled “Improving Family Involvement in Student Learning in the Era of the Common Core State Standards: A Summer Reading Camp for Transitioning third-graders and their Caregivers attending Highland Elementary School in Eunice.” The class recently took a field trip to a bookstore in Lafayette where they were given a budget of $20 to purchase books, and the students also received a children’s mystery series of books upon completion of the program.
