Symposium on Faith and Civic Life at St. Thomas More Catholic Church
In honor of patron, St. Thomas More (an attorney), St. Thomas More Church in Eunice will host a “Symposium on Faith and Civic Life, Thursday, July 3 - Sunday, July 6th. The Symposium begins this evening at 5:30 p.m. with a “Red Mass” in church in honor of all Attorneys and Judges. Mass will be followed by a keynote address by Fr. Edward J. Richard of Our Lady of Prompt Succor Catholic Church in Sulphur. Fr. Richard was an Attorney prior to being ordained a Catholic Priest. The topic of his address will be: “Religious Liberty in Law & Catholic Doctrine”.
At 9 a.m. on Friday, July 4 there will be an Interdenominational Discussion Panel on “Christian Approaches to Cooperation with Government”. Pastors from several different denominations in Eunice will participate and Friday evening at 7 p.m. children of the area are invited for Children’s Fireworks and Ice Cream at the church’s parking lot.
On Saturday, July 5, there will be four major Symposium events, beginning with the First Saturday Mass at 8 a.m. At 1 p.m., a Discussion Panel on “Faith and Civic Life” will convene with panel participants: Earl Taylor, St. Landry Parish D.A.; Jack Burson, Attorney & Alderman-at-Large for the City of Eunice; Donnie Richard, Attorney; and Terry Hoychick, Attorney. The panel will be moderated by Dr. Michael Alleman, Asst. Professor of English at LSU Eunice. Mayor Rusty Moody will give a speech at 5:30 p.m. on “How the City and Churches Can Work Together”.
At 6 p.m. a special showing of “A Man For All Seasons”, a movie based on the life of Saint Thomas More, will be held inside the church social hall. Popcorn and drinks will be served free of charge.
The Symposium will conclude on Sunday, July 6 with a Mass at 8 a.m. and Solemn Mass at 10 a.m., followed by a Parish Picnic for all parishioners beginning at 11:30 a.m. on the church grounds. There will be no 5 p.m. Mass that day due to the picnic. There will be lots of food and games for everyone.
All area residents are invited to come out and enjoy the many events scheduled free of charge.
