Weight management news from nutritionist
Nutritionist from St. Landry/Evangeline Ag Center Office Jennifer Duhon presented a detailed power-point Health and Weight Management from Nutrition Education Network Series (NEWS) and concluded with a cooking demonstration at LSU Eunice in the Community Education Building -Culinary Room on March 19.
Duhon gave tips and suggestions (from Foods & Nutrition Education-from the University of Georgia Cooperative Extension Service) on how to aim for a healthy body weight.
“Choosing a lifestyle that combines healthy eating with regular physical activity are the keys to health and staying fit,” said Duhon.
Key note topics of Duhon’s presentation of managing weight included: Choosing a variety of healthy foods, limiting food and beverages that are high in calories, choosing smaller portion sizes, and becoming physically active everyday.
She also gave a calculation or formula on how to determine body mass.
“You can evaluate your weight by taking your waist measurement and determing your Body Mass Index (BMI). A waist measurement greater than 35 insches for women or 40 inches for men usually means you have too much abdominal fat.
“Measure your waist while standing just above your hip bones. You can calculate your own BMI by: multiply weight in pounds by 700, divide answer by your height in inches without shoes, divide again by your height in inches, and that number is your BMI,” said Duhon.
Go to website www.nhlbisupport.com/bmi. A BMI for adults should be less than 25.
