Beware the faux thaw ... it remains treacherous out there
The drip of ice melting on roofs as home interiors warm tempts some into thinking the thaw has begun -- it hasn't.
The thermometer reads 26-28 degrees and sleet and snow continue to blow across the area glazed over by a pugnacious and persistent winter storm.
Citizens reaching their limit of Words With Friends, Angry Birds, FaceBook, Tweet, HGTV, ESPN and various other modern day diversions are emerging from houses with determined looks on their faces, faces quickly tender to the touch from exposure to sub-freezing air and blustery winds.
Eunice officials remind residents who are getting out and about on roads glazed like fresh-baked donuts, but far from warm and tasty, that it is not safe to be moving around in vehicles and that the National Weather Service says South Louisiana's second winter blow in less than a week is far from over.
Temperatures will remain below freezing until late morning Wednesday, meaning safe-looking roads are far from it.
And city and parish officials remind all and sundry that a parish-wide curfew is in effect from 6 p.m today until 6 a.m. Wednesday. They advised that if you are out between those hours and are stopped, be prepared to prove there is an emergency involved or be prepared to get a citation. That curfew is also currently in effect also for 6 p.m. Wednesday until 6 a.m. Thursday.
The list of all or parts of roads, highways and bridges closed from the Sabine River to the Pearl River above and below Interstate 10 is several electronic pages long. Schools and government agencies remain closed, many businesses told employees not to report until further notice and the National Guard has done what it could to salt roads in key areas.
Stay in, stay warm, stay tuned.
