Bomb was not a bomb, gun was not a gun; three held in State Bank robbery

Selena Fontenot

The “bomb” left at last week’s State Bank robbery was not a bomb and, it turns out, the gun brandished by the bandit was not a gun.
Police discovered that the pistol alleged waved by Selena Fontenot when she robbed the bank Thursday afternoon was a toy when they found it among a stash of evidence Sunday night.
Meanwhile, Fontenot, her husband and another man had been taken into custody, pending charges in connection with the robbery.
Investigators allege that Fontenot entered the bank about 4:30 p.m., waved the fake handgun, took some cash and left, warning that a device she placed in the bank would explode if anybody moved within 10 minutes of her departure.
It was subsequently determined that the bomb was nothing but a battery with some wires attached.
Fontenot allegedly fled to a site behind the nearby Gerald’s Auto Sales, where an alleged get-away driver, Hunter Guillory, 22, was waiting in a pickup truck borrowed from his mother.
At that site, she left two plastic guns, her red plaid leisure pants, shoes and other things worn/used in the robbery.
Records indicate Guillory, who lives across the street from Fontenot and her husband, Conley Ortego, was allegedly paid $50 of the bank loot for his services.
Ortego, police assert, waited at the couple’s Acadia Street residence for the robber and driver to return, fully aware, they alleged of the heist plan.
The couple shortly decided to flee, evidently concluding the police would come calling, since Fontenot’s brother’s had used a similar bank-robbery MO a year or so ago.
They were right. A chicken was still cooking on the stove when the law arrived, but the couple had fled the coop.
Friday night, the bizarre plot took yet another twist, when Fontenot was arrested after allegedly trying to rob a convenience store in Calcasieu Parish.
She came to the attention of patrolling law enforcement because, records indicate, she was going the wrong way on a one-way street.
Investigators could not comment on why she tried to rob a store after getting what was said to be about $3,000 in the bank job 24 hours earlier.
Police could not comment on how much was taken from the bank, but did confirm no cash was found when Fontenot and Ortego were arrested.
Ortego was taken into custody at a motel in Calcasieu Parish, where, police alleged, he waited while his wife went to rob the store.
