Burn ban in effect for St. Landry Parish

Citing a number of grass fires in St. Landry Parish since Sept. 1, Parish President Bill Fontenot placed a burn ban into effect for the next 30 days or until further notice.
The announcement said the 60 grass fires have occurred since Sept. 1.
“The lack of rain and dry vegetation have created hazardous conditions which increase the chance of wildfires. Every precaution needs to be taken to ensure the safety of life and property and we are asking for everyone’s support in this matter,” Fontenot said.
Officials from the St. Landry Parish Office of Homeland Security & Emergency Preparedness and all municipal and district fire chiefs were consulted and agreed to implement this burn ban, the announcement stated.
A burn ban means no burning of any type of debris or trash will be tolerated, the announcement added.
Citizens are encouraged to contact their local fire department if they have any questions.
