City releases rules on yard waste disposal

Staff Report

As leaves start to fall, Eunice Mayor Claud “Rusty” Moody released a news release on the rules governing the disposal of yard waste, leaves, branches and items such as couches and appliances.
City street department crews area are allowed to pick up organic waste such as branches, yard clippings and leaves.
The organic waste must be in a container, such as a trash bag.
City law prohibits placing non-contained leaves and yard clippings at the street curb or on the utility right-of-way.
The loose leaves, pine needles, yard waste clogs the city’s drainage pipes and can cause flooding issues, the news release stated.
City crews will pick up the organic waste when they are placed by the road, but the crews cannot do pickups in alleys.

“The City of Eunice does not have a landfill and cannot pick up non-organic debris such as household garbage, clothes, small appliances, housing materials, roofing material, siding, wood, cabinets or any other non-organic materials,” the news release stated.
“Trash/garbage/debris should be placed in the 96 gallon trash container provided to each home and business by Progressive Waste,” the news release added.
If debris cannot fit into the 96 gallon trash container because of the amount and/or size of debris, as may happen during building renovations or demolition, then it is your responsibility to rent a dumpster through Progressive Waste at 337-942-1291 or, any other local company, the news release stated.
To schedule the pickup of large items such as sofas, chairs, mattresses, refrigerators and water heaters, call Progressive Waste at 337-942-1291.
The city’s news release suggested scheduling a pick-up of absorbent items before they are placed at the curb.
