Council calls tax reallocation vote
The Eunice City Council on Tuesday night called a May 3 election to ask voters to re-allocate the capital improvement sales tax.
The proposed change would give the city access to up to 10 percent more of the tax revenue on a one-time emergency basis in any given fiscal year.
Revenue from the 1 cent tax is about $2.4 million a year. Currently up to 10 percent goes to the city library and 10 percent to the General Fund for day-to-day operating expenses and the remainder goes to capital projects.
A rededication would allow the city to use up to another 10 percent for General Fund emergency expense, as declared by the council.
There is no new or increased tax or tax rate involved in the May referendum.
